September 21, 2015
Utilizing good body mechanics while transferring a client is crucial for the safety of the client and PCA.
When moving a client from bed to chair, chair to bath tub, etc it is crucial to use good body mechanics.
Good body mechanics include:
Clear area between area client is on and where the client is being transferred to
Get client close to yourself as much as possible; get down to their level if they are low to ground
Bend at knees AND waist and grab a hold of client tightly
Lift with client close to your body
Transfer client to new position. If pivoting, pivot with your feet, NOT your back.
Ensure client is secure in new area
Back safety is crucial for the rest of your left as everyone only gets one spine.
