Must Try Sports in Amsterdam
Working out with friends is a big part of Amsterdam’s social life. Join a sports class together, have a cup of coffee afterward, and share that sweet pain of sore muscles the next day. Haven’t found anything you like? We’ll help you on your way.
Boxing
Boxing has become a popular workout around Amsterdam, with many places now offering boxing classes. No need to worry about getting too physical here because, for most classes, you are taking on a punching bag. Boxing doesn’t only improve your physical condition, it also improves strength, coordination, and balance. We call this a win-win-win-win! Besides the physical benefits, boxing also helps release stress and tension. So put on your boxing gloves and take out your thesis frustration onto the punching bag! Some places are Het Gymlokaal, Fight District, and Sin City.

Yoga
A great way to relax from your buzzing student life is to join a yoga class. If you prefer a more active yoga class, you might like Vinyasa or Ashtanga. Looking for something more calming? Then try hatha or yin yoga. Amsterdam offers endless possibilities for yoga classes, so you can be sure to find something you like. Near Amstel and Zuidas, some great yoga studios are Karunika Yoga and Studio Balance. Close to Minervahaven and NDSM are Yogaschool Noord NDSM and Tula Yoga.
Cycling
Want to get out of your head and into your body after a long day of studying or working? Try out a cycling class at Vélo or Rocycle. During their classes, you’ll do different high and low-intensity exercises targeting your entire body. The instructors will guide you through the class with great beats and motivational speeches. Get ready to sweat! These cycling classes are some of the most popular ones in Amsterdam, so be sure to book them in advance.
HIIT
HIIT, short for High-Intensity Interval Training, is a form of exercise where you alternate short bursts of intense exercise with short, low-intensity recovery periods. These workouts are usually around 45 minutes, perfect for adding movement to your day. Please note: although you’ll feel in great spirits after the training, you may experience sore muscles after the first few times ;).
Running
A great, affordable way to explore the city while getting healthy is by going for a run! If you’re a morning person, you can enjoy a run through the center just before the city wakes up. Prefer being surrounded by nature as you get your miles in? No problem! Amsterdam has over 30 beautiful parks distributed around the city, so there’s probably a park near you. There are also infinite gyms and boutique studios, such as TrainMore and The Workout Lab that are perfect for when it’s raining or if you want to combine your running workout with weight training.
Work out at Student Experience
Of course, you don’t need to leave Student Experience to do a workout. There are plenty of possibilities for sports at each building. Whenever the weather is nice, you can plan an activity at one of the rooftop sports fields. You can bring your own equipment for a workout, play basketball with friends, or sign up for the sports events we offer throughout the summer: Rooftop Yoga Sessions and Rooftop Football with FC Urban.
Do you want to do a quick workout with complete focus? Grab your headphones and head to the gym, which you can find at Amsterdam Amstel, Zuidas, and Minervahaven. You can use the gym for free between 07:00 and 21:00.
