5 sustainable habits that can save you money
At Student Experience, we do many things to make our complexes more sustainable. At some locations, we’ve planted local flora and fauna in the courtyards to promote biodiversity, and at others, we recycle rainwater and generate electricity through solar panels. We believe sustainability is a mindset, and a greener world is created by changing our habits to be more sustainable. Here are some tips for doing that!
You can do a lot as an individual and may even inspire some people along the road. By changing small habits in your everyday life, you can already make a significant impact.
Best of all? These habits aren’t just good for the planet; they’re also good for your wallet. And that’s something we can all appreciate.
Go by bike
A natural habit for most Dutchies: getting around by bike as much as possible! Cycling is the cheapest way of traveling, you don’t emit harmful substances, and it gives you enough exercise for the day. Tip: Make sure you always check the weather forecast before you head out. Even if you’re staying in Student Experience Madrid Pozuelo, cycling is a great way to explore your surroundings. Get on the road and enjoy the endless rays of sun on your face!
Bring your bag
In most European countries, shopkeepers are forbidden to give away plastic bags for free. The prices for plastic bags vary from €0.10 up to €0.60 as shopkeepers can decide their prices. If you buy groceries three times a week and buy a plastic bag every single time, you can imagine how that adds up and the amount of waste you’re creating if you use each bag only once. Make it a habit always to bring a reusable bag wherever you go. Add one in all your day bags, hang one on your front door, and if necessary, add another underneath the carrier straps of your bike.
Reduce your paper use
If you’re a student who loves using paper for their notes, thoughts, mind maps, and flashcards, it’s time to reduce your paper waste. Paper may seem like a sustainable and natural product, but because of all the bleach and deforestation, it’s wise to move away from single-use paper. There are many efficient alternatives to paper, such as reusable stationery that you can use multiple times. Free apps like Notion are also great for organizing your study notes.
Buy second hand
Need something you currently don’t have? Whether you’re looking to decorate your furnished studio or buy some furniture pieces, second-hand is the way to go. Online, you can shop on platforms such as Marktplaats (only in the Netherlands), Wallapop (only in Spain), Facebook Marketplace, or Vinted. You can also explore second-hand shops and flea markets around your neighborhood. Instead of buying something new, you can often find beautiful and unique items – almost as new – for a small price.
Borrowing and renting
Do you know those items you only use a few times, such as a printer, board game, or a karaoke set? Often, these end up in the back of a closet, gathering dust after a while. Instead of buying these items, ask if you can borrow them from a friend. No luck? Don’t worry! Our TULU units have everything you need. You can rent the items you need for your projects, your studio, or a fun night with friends for a small fee.
