New year, new friends!
A great year is even better when shared with great friends who turn ordinary moments into extraordinary memories. And that’s something we all want, right? Studies show that one of the key components of a healthy, happy life – physically, mentally, and emotionally – is to have a strong community around you. And that doesn’t mean a group of 100 people. Just a handful of people you can really be yourself with is more than enough. If you’re ready to step up your friendship game this year, keep reading!
1. Go out there
Are you waiting for your new bestie to show up at your doorstep? We’re sorry to tell you, but most of the time, that won’t happen. You’ve got to take the plunge and get out there. We’re leaving the comfort zone in 2023 and are making things happen this year!
Think of going to the same sports class every week, joining a multiple-week creative course, or joining a WhatsApp group for people with the same interest, like running. You can even meet people at places you find yourself often, such as at work, university, or in the lounge or study rooms at Student Experience. Need some more inspiration? 2. Small gestures, big impact
Great friendships aren’t formed overnight. All big things start small, so put your effort into small gestures and trust that they may flourish into something greater. Picture this: you’re waiting for your sports class to start while staring at your phone. Well, this way, you’re not opening yourself up to the possibility of meeting people. Put that phone away and acknowledge the people around you with a smile, a hello, or a genuine compliment.
3. Take initiative
Shared experiences and common interests are the basis for a friendship. Once you’ve sparked a connection, don’t shy away from taking the initiative. Doing something together can be low-key, such as studying, joining a sports class, or signing up for a Student Experience event. Find this scary? Remember that most people would feel flattered if someone wanted to spend time with them. :)
4. Keep it up
Every relationship needs attention every now and then. This includes friendships! Send your (new) friends a thoughtful text, schedule regular meet-ups, and commit to staying connected. This applies not only to new friendships but also to existing friendships. Nurturing your friendships is essential for making better friends and for being a better friend.
5. Be a good friend
Being a good friend isn’t just about having a great sense of humor (although that definitely helps); it comes with a couple of positive and supporting characteristics.
- Be yourself! True friendships blossom when there’s a level of openness and authenticity. Being yourself is the best thing you can do, not only for yourself but also for others. It creates an environment where people feel safe to be themselves.
- Be someone others can depend on. Avoid canceling plans at the last minute, and be there for your friends in good and bad times.
- Communicate openly and with respect. Respect each other’s opinions and choices, even if they differ from yours. Being honest and open with each other strengthens emotional connections and helps resolve conflicts.
So, there you have it – your guide to making new friends in 2024. Get ready to make new friends and, with that, new memories!
