5 spots to cool off
It’s summer in the city! When the temperature rises, everybody in Amsterdam is looking for the perfect spot to take a refreshing dip. Fortunately, there are plenty of places to splash around. The following spots can be reached quickly from the Amsterdam Amstel location. Turn on your vacay mode, inflate a giant flamingo and don't forget to bring a few friends and/or roommates who can hand you drinks. Alright then, also to enjoy their good company.
1. South end Weesperzijde
With the Amstel in front of your door, it is not very difficult to quickly strike a pose on that inflatable flamingo. You can swim in various places in the Amstel. The long strip next to the terrace of café Hesp is a well-known swimming spot that is also called 'Costa del Weesper' in summer. Near down the Berlagebrug rowing center you find a jetty where you can easily get into the water. But probably even more fun to do is rent a boat with friends and find those quiet unknown spots or take a dive from the boat.
2. Park Somerlust
Not the type who dives into the water without hesitation? We feel you! In the creek of the Amstel, in the middle of the new residential area of Amstelkwartier, you can easily get used to the temperature of the water by a small staircase. The first part of the water is shallow and Park Somerlust is easily accessible by both bicycle and public transport. In addition, there are nice cafes and restaurants nearby for a snack and drink. What more does a person need?
3. Gaasperplas
A little further, but definitely worth a visit, is Gaasperplas in Amsterdam southeast. Within 25 minutes cycling you will arrive and you definitely earned that cooling dive! The thing that makes this place the perfect spot to cool off is the elongated beach on the south side of the lake surrounding by woods, where you can enjoy a picnic in the shade.
4. De Hoge Dijk (the high dike)
Recreational area De Hoge Dijk can be found in Amsterdam southeast (between AMC and Abcoude). Here too it is pleasant to stay because of the green environment. The large lake has a defined swimming area and a sandy beach. Of course you won't go home until you've built the biggest sandcastle ever!
5. Ouderkerkerplas
One of the advantages of living in Amsterdam Amstel is that you can also easily visit some great spots that are just outside the city. Ouderkerk aan de Amstel is a picture perfect village where you get the ultimate holiday feeling. There is both a sand and grass beach to lay down your beach towel. Also this place is well-known because of its many great restaurants and it is needless to say you can’t cycle back home on an empty stomach..
