Ambitious students – a passion for photography through Kim's lens

How did you get into photography? 

"I got into photography when I was 8 years old. For my birthday, I got a small camera. I would bring the camera with me while walking in nature and take pictures of the sky and the clouds. That's how it started.   

I quit for a while because I got busy, had some health issues, and didn't have the right equipment to pursue my passion. When looking into what degree to pursue, I considered studying at the Fotovakschool, which specializes in teaching photography. Since it's a private school, it's pretty expensive, and you need specific equipment, making it even more expensive. Because there's a lot of competition in the field of photography, you'll have to be really good to stand out from the crowd. Therefore, I decided to pursue a law degree to give me more security and a steady income. Next to that, I would take courses and attend workshops to improve my photography skills.   

About 1,5 years ago, I bought a good camera and lens and started taking pictures again. Since then, I focused on starting my own photography business, mainly focusing on portrait and fashion photography. After finishing my law degree, I started wanting to take up photography again, and I've started doing more and more photo shoots." 

What makes photography so much fun?  

“Photography just makes me feel really Zen. When I photograph people, I get into this zone, which makes me really happy. I love being creative, and I love social interaction. Doing photography brings those two together.  

I did photo shoots with friends who are sometimes a little bit self-conscious. When they saw the results, they were amazed by how beautiful they looked in the images. And that response is what I'm doing it all for! Currently, I'm studying psychology, and that's a fascinating combination with photography; to dive into one's psyche and then, to visualize it.” 

Where do you see yourself going with photography?  

“Ever since I got my first camera when I was 8, I've dreamed of having my own photography studio. I’m looking into taking a studio photography course, so I can take pictures both in the studio and outdoors. I don't want to be dependent on the weather; I want to be able to take pictures at any time. One thing I would really like to buy is an umbrella that I can attach to my camera. That way, I can even take pictures in the rain! At some point, I would also like to travel with my camera, taking pictures of different people in different cultures.”  

Do you have any tips for people who want to start with photography?  

“Having a good camera is important, of course. Research which brand you want to buy and try out different cameras. You can visit a camera store and ask if they can recommend certain cameras within your budget. You don't need the most expensive one – you can always upgrade later on. I would suggest a simple DSLR camera because they're easy to use. When you have your camera, you just have to start photographing. Be bold, sit or lay on the ground, make the cars wait, and make your model feel like a star!”
