How to relax after a long study day
Studying for long hours requires a lot of focus and energy, often leaving you feeling drained afterward. Giving yourself a well-deserved break after a study sesh isn't a luxury, but a necessity. By taking time to really relax, you'll have more energy for the next study session! Here are seven effective ways to relax after a long study day.
1. Move your body
After sitting for long periods, moving your body is one of the quickest ways to feel refreshed. We all know that a sedentary lifestyle isn't that great, so take time to get up, stretch, and move! Exercising isn't just great for your body, but also releases endorphins, which naturally lift your mood. The movement doesn't have to be intense; take a brisk walk, enjoy a gentle yoga flow, or go all out in the gym – just pick whatever feels good to you. Getting your blood flowing is a great way to release any tension built up during your study sessions, helping you feel more relaxed.

2. Stay away from screens
An easy trap to fall into after studying is reaching for your phone or laptop for a “break". Unfortunately, this doesn't help your brain unwind at all. Social media, news, or entertainment apps are created to keep you stimulated, alerting you with little notifications here and there, and giving you dopamine spikes with every swipe. Your brain is processing more information instead of winding down, which is the opposite of what you need after studying. Give your eyes and brain a rest by engaging in screen-free activities. This way, you’ll give your mind the chance to truly disconnect and recharge.
3. Meet up with your friends
Socializing is a great way to shake off the stress of studying. Spending time with friends allows you to step out of the study mindset and reconnect with people around you. Whether you meet up for a coffee, share a sports class, or play a board game, quality social time can be a valuable mental break and provides an outlet for any built-up stress.
4. Journal the day away
Journalling is another great way to clear your mind and release any lingering stress. Write down your thoughts, summarize your day, or journal about what you've learned. Don't think about it too much - who's gonna read it anyway? - but just jot down whatever comes to mind. It's a great way to avoid overthinking or stressing about unfinished tasks, which frees up mental space and helps you unwind.

5. Engage in low-effort hobbies
Hobbies can be incredibly relaxing after a day of study, but the trick is to keep them low effort. Choose easy hobbies that allow you to enjoy yourself without feeling pressured to achieve anything specific. Reading a few chapters of a fun book, doodling, painting, or even filling in an adult coloring book are all great options. These hobbies provide a gentle escape, allowing you to be creative without adding to your to-do list.
6. Enjoy healthy comfort food
We get it. After a long day of studying, you usually crave an easy, comforting meal. It's important to remember that eating healthy foods can help your brain and body recover faster. After a day of working out your brain in the study rooms, it needs some extra nutrients! Instead of reaching for the instant mac ‘n cheese, try a healthier version with whole-grain pasta, lean proteins, and vegetables. Not only will you satisfy your comfort cravings, but you’ll also fuel your body with essential nutrients that support brain health
7. Create a calming night-time routine
Getting a good night's sleep is essential so you can process what you've learned, while preparing for the next day. To prevent overthinking and help you drift off more easily, create a calming nighttime routine to support you in that. Dim your lights, avoid screens, and take a warm shower. Want to try a calming tea before bedtime? Look for herbal teas that don't contain white, green or black tea leaves, but instead contain herbs like valerian root, chamomile, lavender or lemon balm. Establishing a consistent bedtime and routine helps your body recognize when it’s time to relax, making it easier to wind down and fall asleep naturally.

With these tips, we're sure you'll find it easier to relax and unwind, so you can start again fresh tomorrow!
