Ambitious Students – Alberto and his passion for audiovisuals
In this edition of Ambitious Students, we meet Alberto, a young filmmaker and photographer with a unique eye for capturing moments. Currently studying cinema at ECAM in Madrid, his true passion extends beyond the classroom: telling stories through the lens. From short films to portraits, Alberto has successfully fused his love for visual art with his academic life. In this interview, we explore how he got started, his inspirations, and how he balances creativity with his studies.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself, your passions and what motivates you?
I’m Alberto Montull, I’m 21 years old, and I’m from Vigo. It all started in high school, where I studied arts. That’s where I began making my first videos and discovered my passion for the camera. I enjoyed it so much that I knew I was on the right path. Without a doubt, I wanted to keep exploring this world.
During those years, I never stopped creating:; I filmed everyday life at school, events, and even made several short films. In my final year, one of my shorts won 26 awards. That’s when I realized I was truly good at this and wanted to dedicate my life to it.
Are you working on any projects right now that you’d like to share?
Yes! I’m currently working on a film with some friends, but I can’t share many details yet because it’s in pre-production. We’re still figuring out funding. At the same time, I’m working on a streaming show for Twitch and writing a screenplay.
How do you balance your creative projects with your studies?
Honestly, juggling university projects and personal work can be tough. While it sometimes feels overwhelming, with good task management and scheduling, everything falls into place. When you’re truly passionate about something, you always find time for it.
Which film or photographer has inspired you the most?
I’m very open-minded, so I don’t fixate on one style, film, person, or genre. Being behind the camera, I deeply value the storytelling in every shot, which makes it hard to pick a favorite.
But if I had to highlight something recent, I loved the series Adolescence. As a fan of long takes, it won me over instantly.
What’s your most personal project or the one you’re proudest of?
Without a doubt, the short film I mentioned earlier, the one I made in high school. Though it’s not my best work, it holds a special place in my heart as my first serious project. I’m proud to have made it in school, with limited resources and tight schedules. Despite the chaos, it was recognized, and that’s something I’ll never forget. It was the perfect farewell to one chapter and the start of a whole new world to explore.
What advice would you give to other students who want to pursue film or photography?
I’d tell them to stay true to themselves. It’s good to listen to others, but in the end, you have to follow what excites you and feels authentic. Don’t let negative comments steer you off course. If I had listened to some people who crossed my path, I might be studying something I hate just to please others.
