Day trip to windmills 

Only 20 minutes away from Amsterdam, you’ll find De Zaanse Schans, an open-air museum where visitors can see how people in the Netherlands once lived and worked. Functioning windmills are scattered all over, offering a glimpse into the country’s industrial past. Traditional crafts are also demonstrated, including clog-making and cheese production. Additionally, you’ll find the very first Albert Heijn supermarket here! 

Keukenhof Gardens 

Keukenhof Gardens is a must-visit spot if you’re studying in the Netherlands during spring. Known as the “Garden of Europe,” it’s located in Lisse and famous for its massive fields of colourful tulips and other flowers. Perfect for a day trip with friends or some great photos for your feed!

The park is only open for a limited time each year (usually March to May), when everything is in full bloom. In 2026, Keukenhof will be open from March 19 to May 10, so don’t miss your chance to experience it while it lasts.

Since it’s one of the most popular attractions in the country, tickets can sell out quickly, especially on weekends. Make sure to book in advance so you can get a time slot that fits your schedule. 

Visit The Tulip Fields 

If Keukenhof feels a bit too crowded, the Tulip Experience is a great alternative for a more relaxed, student-friendly day out. You’ll still get incredible views of the tulip fields and plenty of photo spots without the heavy crowds. 
For the full Dutch experience, you can rent a bike or join a bike tour and explore the surrounding area with friends.

Just keep in mind: while you’ll be close to the fields, don’t step into or stand between the tulips, these flowers are carefully grown by local farmers, and walking through them can damage their work. 

Since it’s a popular spring activity, it’s a good idea to book your tickets in advance, so you don’t miss out! 

Enjoy the cherry blossom season 

Although you can find cherry blossoms scattered around the city, we recommend visiting Het Kersenbloesempark. Located just outside of Amsterdam in Het Amsterdamse Bos, this park is filled with beautiful cherry blossom trees that bloom in spring. 

It’s a peaceful spot where you can take a relaxing walk, enjoy a picnic with friends, or simply sit under the pink blossoms and take in the scenery. On sunny days, it can get quite busy, so if you’re looking for a more serene experience, we recommend going early in the day. 

Party on King’s Day

One of April’s highlights is King's Day, marking the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. It is something you definitely don’t want to miss! 

It takes place on April 27 and is a full day of partying, drinking, and dancing in the streets, with everyone dressed in orange, the national color. There are parties all over the city, with DJs performing from their own balconies and along the canals. 

The canals are filled with boats and people celebrating on the water, but for a better experience, it’s best to stay on land. Boats often have very little space to move due to the large crowds, and you may end up stuck there.

Street markets 

A great way to experience Amsterdam beyond the typical tourist spots is by checking out the local street markets. 
One of the most popular is the Albert Cuyp Market in De Pijp. It’s the biggest and busiest street market, with hundreds of vendors selling everything from fresh produce and street food to clothes and souvenirs. It’s also a great place to try local snacks.  

A popular option for thrift shopping is the Waterlooplein Market. Here you’ll find vintage clothing, antiques, books, and unique second-hand items, perfect if you enjoy treasure hunting. 

For a more local and less touristy experience, visit the Ten Katemarkt in Amsterdam West. It’s smaller but offers fresh food, flowers, and everyday goods at good prices. 

Swing on Europe’s highest swing 

If the weather is in your favor and you look for a unique and thrilling experience, A’DAM Tower is a must visit. It has the highest swings in Europe hovering 100 meters in the air where you can enjoy a panoramic view over Amsterdam.
