Closet glow-up: refresh what you already own
How many times have you found yourself in front of your closet full of clothes, screaming “I have nothing to wear!”. We've all been there, but what can we do when none of our pieces suit our style anymore? Sure, we can keep buying new ones, or... we can reinvent them! Did you know you could create a whole new unique wardrobe on a budget, while contributing to a more sustainable future by reducing overconsumption and waste? Let us introduce you to our favorite upcycling and styling methods.
Customize your clothes with rhinestones
If you love Y2K fashion, a hot fix applicator and rhinestones are all you need to transform any basic piece into something bold and unique. It’s an easy way to add sparkle and personality to your wardrobe.
Start by creating your design, either draw it directly onto the fabric or sketch it on paper and transfer it by poking small guide holes. Once your layout is ready, use tweezers to carefully place the rhinestones. Then apply heat with the applicator to activate the glue. For extra hold, place a cloth over the design and lightly iron it to secure everything in place.
Lino printing
Linoleum (or lino) printing is a fun and creative technique where you carve a design into a soft linoleum block, roll ink over it, and press it onto paper or fabric to create prints. It’s similar to stamping, but you make your own custom design, which you can reuse multiple times. Perfect for beginners, it’s an easy way to create unique printed textiles or even artwork or postcards.
If you are a complete beginner, you can find a lot of kits online with everything that you need to get started and feel less overwhelmed by all the new tools.

Turn an old T-shirt into a tote bag
I bet you have a lot of old T-shirts with great designs on them, but that just don’t suit your vibe anymore. How about turning them into tote bags?
Turn the shirt inside out and cut off the sleeves and neckline depending on how wide you want your handles and top opening to be. Mark your desired bag length with chalk. Cut vertical slits along the bottom edge, about 1 inch apart, through both layers. Tie the front and back strips together across the bottom to close the base, double knot for extra hold. Turn the shirt right-side out, and the bag is ready to use.
Advanced DIY
If you’re ready to take it further, try working with a sewing machine. You can completely transform your clothes, turn old jeans into skirts or basic T-shirts into unique tops. Adding details like grommets or safety pins can also give your pieces a more elevated, edgy look.

Reinvent the way you wear your clothes
A non-invasive way to elevate your outfits is to learn new ways to wear them. Here are some tips:
- With a nice ribbon and some safety pins, you can upgrade a simple shirt and style it in multiple ways. Or you can wear it in unconventional ways such as tops, skirts and so much more.
- Turning scarves and blouses into tops without alternating the material. Not only can you keep the same pieces, but you can create new options out of them anytime you like.
- Wear a tie as a scarf or as a belt. So simple, yet it gives such a different vibe to your outfit.
Pinterest and Tik Tok provide a lot of good inspiration, but don’t forget to let your imagination and creativity wander around. Sometimes the best outfits come out when you let go of the judgmental thoughts in your head and focus on what makes you feel and look good.
Upcycling is more than just a way to refresh your wardrobe; it’s a mindset. By reimagining what you already own, you not only create unique pieces that truly reflect your style but also make more mindful choices that reduce waste and overconsumption. Sometimes, the best new outfit is one you already have… just worn differently.
