The best road trips in Spain with a (shared) car!

As the summer holidays are nearing their end, you might be wondering how to squeeze in some more adventure before the academic year starts. Or maybe you're already planning a weekend getaway to keep that holiday spirit alive during your studies. Don't have a driver's license? No worries! Most of these destinations are accessible by train, too.

From Madrid Pozuelo 

Segovia 

In just an hour's drive (or a 30-minute train ride) from Madrid Pozuelo, you'll find the historic city of Segovia. Known for the famous Roman aqueduct and the Alcázar of Segovia – a fairy-tale castle that inspired Walt Disney – you can spend your day in awe of the incredible architecture. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so we recommend exploring this place on foot, so you can see all the amazing details.

Toledo 

Also just an hour away by car (or 30 minutes by train), you'll find Toledo, known as the ‘City of Three Cultures’. The city blends influences from Christianity, Judaism, and Islam in incredible architecture. Wander through the narrow streets and enjoy panoramic views from the Mirador del Valle.

El Escorial 

The Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a massive complex including a palace, monastery, library, and church. Traveling by car or train takes you here in one hour. This place was the residence of the King of Spain and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  

What to do: Sightseeing, local food & drinks, museums, and cultural activities.

Chinchón 

This charming town with a picturesque central square is only 1 hour by car or bus. The square, Plaza Mayor, is surrounded by old buildings with nice, blue-green balconies. It's known for its wine and food, and if you visit during one of the local festivals, you can experience traditional Spanish culture.  

What to do: Sightseeing, local food & drinks, wine-tasting, and traditional Spanish events.

Sierra de Guadarrama National Park 

Craving some nature? A one-hour drive (or train ride) will take you to the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. This diverse mountain range offers opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, or just relaxing in nature. And there's a lot of local wildlife, too! Popular spots are the Peñalara, the highest peak of the range, and the Laguna Grande de Peñalara, a beautiful lake. You can also get to the park by train.  

What to do: hiking, rock climbing, skiing, snowboarding, camping, and more.

Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park

For those wanting to venture a bit further, a 2.5-hour road trip will take you to the Lagunas de Ruidera Natural Park. This park has incredible lagoons that are connected by waterfalls. It's a great spot for swimming, hiking, and kayaking. Want to stay overnight? You can find affordable stays starting at € 40 per night for two people in the area.

From Granada  

Málaga 

Málaga is the city where culture meets the coast. You can travel there in 1,5 hours by car, bus, or train Because this is the birthplace of Picasso, you'll find a vibrant art scene here, with the Picasso Museum being a must-visit. Enjoy one of the city's beautiful beaches or have some delicious food on the promenade.

Córdoba 

If you love historical cities, Córdoba is a must-visit. In 2 hours by car or 1,5 hours by train, you can spend a day or weekend in this stunning city. Wander through the city's charming streets, and visit the Mezquita-Catedral, a unique mosque-cathedral showing the blend of Islamic and Christian architecture. Other must-sees are the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos and the Roman Bridge.

Nerja 

In just 1 hour, you can drive to Nerja, a picturesque town known for its stunning beaches and famous Nerja Caves. Take a look at the prehistoric paintings and the largest stalactite, and visit Balcón de Europa, a viewpoint offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea.  

What to do: Caves, beaches, sightseeing, and coastal walks.

Sevilla 

Sevilla is the perfect spot for a weekend getaway. In about 2,5 hours by car or train or 3 hours by bus, you'll get to enjoy this culturally rich city. Explore the stunning Plaza de España, the Seville Cathedral, and the Giralda Tower, and enjoy the lively vibes with flamenco, festivals, and vibrant nightlife.

La Herradura  

For a relaxed, seaside escape, drive 50 minutes south to La Herradura. This small coastal village is known for its beautiful bay, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The town offers a laid-back atmosphere with charming beachside restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood.

Almuñecar 

Also in 50 minutes from Granada is Amuñécar, where you can find a blend of beautiful beaches and rich history. Visit the San Miguel Castle, stroll through the botanical gardens, or spend a day relaxing on the sandy beaches. Almuñécar’s lively atmosphere and stunning views make it a perfect day trip or weekend getaway.
