Why student housing in Amsterdam is in high demand.

Amsterdam is one of Europe's most popular student cities, welcoming thousands of Dutch and international students each year. With renowned universities such as the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), demand for student housing in Amsterdam consistently exceeds the available supply.

As a result, finding suitable accommodation can be challenging. Private rentals are often expensive, unfurnished and rented out quickly, while international students may face additional challenges when searching from abroad.

To improve your chances of finding a suitable studio, it's important to start your search well before the academic year begins. Choosing a trusted student housing provider like Student Experience gives you the certainty of transparent rental conditions, fully managed residences and a straightforward booking process, so you can arrange your accommodation before arriving in Amsterdam.

Frequently asked questions about student housing in the Netherlands.

  • Is it hard to find housing in Amsterdam as an international student?

Yes, finding student housing in Amsterdam can be challenging. The city is facing a housing crisis, and with thousands of Dutch and international students looking for accommodation each year, demand is often much higher than the number of available rooms and studios.

To improve your chances, it's a good idea to:

    • Start your search as early as possible.
    • Register with multiple trusted housing providers.
    • Check whether your university offers student accommodation.
    • Keep an eye on new availability and booking windows.

At Student Experience, we offer different ways to book. Studios at Amsterdam Minervahaven can be booked directly when available, while studios at Amsterdam NDSM, Amstel, and Zuidas are allocated through an automated, random draw. We do not work with waiting lists, which means everyone who joins a draw has an equal chance of being selected. Some of our studios are also offered through the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

Planning ahead, keeping an eye on new availability, and exploring multiple housing options will give you the best chance of finding accommodation before your studies begin.

  • What is student housing in Amsterdam like?

Amsterdam is a popular student city, attracting students from across the Netherlands and from all over the world. Because so many people move to the city to study, student housing is in high demand.

Many students rent a room in a shared apartment through a private landlord, while others choose purpose-built student accommodation for more privacy and convenience.

At Student Experience, we offer fully furnished private studios with your own kitchen and bathroom, plus shared facilities such as study rooms, a gym, laundromats, and community spaces. All of our locations have another really cool thing in common: a rooftop sports field with incredible views! With an international community and regular events, it’s an easy way to settle into student life in Amsterdam.

  • How much does student housing in Amsterdam cost?

The cost of student housing in Amsterdam depends on the type of accommodation, the location, and whether you're renting through a university, a private landlord, or a student housing provider. Private studios generally cost more than a room in a shared apartment, but they offer the comfort of having your own kitchen and bathroom.

At Student Experience, prices vary by location and studio type:

    • Amsterdam Minervahaven: prices are all-in, including VAT, utilities, municipal taxes, and services. You'll know exactly what you're paying each month.
    • Amsterdam Amstel, NDSM, and Zuidas: rental prices are based on the Dutch government’s housing points system (woningwaarderingsstelsel). Service costs are charged separately and cover items such as utilities, internet, cleaning of shared spaces, and building services.

No matter which Student Experience location you choose, your stay includes access to all on-site facilities, such as study rooms, lounges, sports facilities, and the events and activities organized on location.

The best way to find the most up-to-date prices is to check the price page of the location you're interested in.

  • How do I find student housing in Amsterdam as an international student?

Finding student housing in Amsterdam can be competitive, so international students should start searching as early as possible. You can explore:

    • Housing offered through your university
    • Trusted student housing and rental platforms
    • Purpose-built student residences in Amsterdam (like Student Experience!)
    • Private rooms, shared apartments, or fully furnished studios

Always check whether the accommodation allows municipality registration, as this is usually required to receive your BSN.

At Student Experience Amsterdam Minervahaven, international students can book a fully furnished private studio directly. The studios come with their own kitchen and bathroom, while residents also have access to shared facilities, services, social activities, and an international student community.

  • Can I book Student Experience Amsterdam before arriving in the Netherlands?

Yes! You can arrange your accommodation before you arrive in the Netherlands, so you'll have a place to call home from day one.

How you book depends on the location:

    • Amsterdam Minervahaven: If studios are available, you can book your studio directly on our website on a first come, first served basis.
    • Amsterdam Amstel, NDSM & Zuidas: Studios are allocated through our automated draw. If you're selected, you'll receive an invitation to complete your booking.

Before booking, make sure you have your proof of enrolment ready. If you haven't received your final enrolment yet, a preliminary acceptance or admission letter from your educational institution is usually sufficient to start the process.

That way, you'll be all set to move into Amsterdam with one less thing to worry about.

  • How early should I start looking for student housing in Amsterdam?

As early as possible. Student housing in Amsterdam is in high demand, especially before the start of the academic year, so it’s best to begin your search several months before you plan to move.

At Student Experience, we offer studios with different start dates throughout the year. You can see the available start date during the booking process or in the studio advertisement, depending on the location and studio type.

  • When do new studios become available at Student Experience Amsterdam?

    This depends on the location:

    • Amsterdam Minervahaven: Bookings for the next academic year usually open around April, with the first move-in dates starting in June and additional start dates throughout the summer. More studios may become available later in the year due to cancellations, but this is never guaranteed.
    • Amsterdam Amstel, NDSM, and Zuidas: New studios become available throughout the year as current residents move out. In most cases, these studios have move-in dates within the next two months. Available studios are allocated through our automated, random draw.

We recommend checking availability regularly. If you're interested in Amsterdam Amstel, NDSM, or Zuidas, you can register for the automated draw. If you see an available studio at Amsterdam Minervahaven, you can book it directly on a first-come, first-served basis while it's still available.
